14 days on a sugar free diet 

I'm on something of a health kick at the moment, and this is the longest I've managed to stick to it in my entire life. The hardest thing for me right now isn't the exercising or hunger, its sugar. I didn't realize how much of a sugar addict I was until I cut it out completely - at least - I managed to for 2 weeks. The first couple days were horrific, I just felt tired, moody, massive withdrawal symptoms. This article on a woman who cut out sugar was helpful, and made me think about sugar not as an evil, but something to have in moderation.

I've loved Chelsea Wears for the longest time, recently she's started doing weekly vlogs, where she shares her life in the most frank and refreshingly honest way. I love how unapoligetically herself she is.

The Weekend - Tell your friends

I love the Weekend, his lyrics are derogatory to women, mostly about sex and drugs, but damn it his voice is like velvet, I can forgive the lyrics. Also his videos although simple, often tell a story, which I like.



I remember being obsessed with this series when it first aired on TV, years later I found it on Netflix and have been binge watching it for the past few days. This such an interesting show, with well thought out, carefully crafted characters and back stories. If you've never heard of Lost, the premise is a plane crashes on an island in the middle of no where. These people have to learn to survive together and chaos ensues. Its really gripping, I was worried it wouldn't be as good as the first time I watched it, but its even better.

Witches of East End

This is a Netflix original I believe, its about four witches who have been cursed to live and die over and over again, forever. Its a great story line and I love that it centres around a family of four women. It feels very modern, and unlike most witch shows I have seen in the past. I like that the women are heavily flawed, they feel real.

Black Butler

I'm surprised I haven't mentioned this anime before. My sister introduced me to Black Butler and I re-watched it recently. Each episode is only something like 20 minutes so its very easy to get sucked into that 'eternal Netflix doom' thing where you watch for hours on end because you need to know what happens next (just me? it can't just be me...) this is about a rich child and his supernaturally talented butler, its set in Victorian London and invloves a lot of suspense, murderous intentions and supernatural themes. Its rare that I'll re-watch an anime so this one is absolutely worthy viewing.

Kale smoothie bowl

Kale is one of the worlds healthiest foods, it has more nutrients per serving than most other foods. Its high in vitamin A, vitamin C and Vitamin K. It also contains potassium and calcium, absolutely crammed with antioxidants, and is very low in calories, yet manages to be quite filling. I've taken to eating it every day and feel much better for it. I got bored of eating it (like cabbage, it has a mild, but dull taste) so I thought I'd make it taste a little more interesting by mixing it with fruit. This smoothie bowl contains all of the nutrients listed above, as well as fibre and essential fatty acids from the flax seed, potassium and a natural sweetness from the banana, and heart disease fighting power from the blueberries.

This is a quick and easy way to get a phenomenal amount of nutrients into your body. You can put it into a thermal and take it to work, have it for breakfast, or a healthy snack throughout the day. This only takes 15 minutes from start to finish.

Ingredients - serves 2

About 4 handfuls of Kale (stalks removed)
2 handfuls of frozen blueberries 
2 tablespoons natural yoghurt (use soy to make it dairy free)
2 heaped tablespoons milled (ground) flaxseed
1 large banana

Remove all the thick stems from the kale, then boil it in a saucepan on high heat for around 8 minutes, once the leaves are soft, drain the water into a separate jug/container for later. Put the kale to one side to cool for 5 minutes.

In the blender, put the kale, yoghurt and flax seed, blend until the kale has become liquid. This may take 30 seconds or so as Kale is a fibrous vegetable. Add spoonfuls of the kale water every so often until consistency is relatively smooth.

Through the top of the blender, add small chunks of banana every ten seconds, allowing enough time for each piece of banana to be blended before adding the next. After every few chunks, add a few tablespoons of the kale water too. Keeping the water the kale was boiled in means you aren't wasting any of the nutrients usually lost in the cooking process.

 Once all the banana is incorporated, add the frozen blueberries a few at a time with the blender on, don't add to many at one time or the blender will complain (metaphorically) Once all the blueberries are well blended we're done!

This makes two servings, I make a batch and eat half that same day, and save the other half for the next morning. This is a healthy and very low calorie/ very low fat breakfast for those that need something in the mornings, but don't want to feel overly full. If you crave a bigger breakfast you can add muesli, bran flakes or granola, Topping it with nuts and seeds will add protein and flavour. Other optional extras are raisins, berries and coconut flakes. If the natural sweetness of the banana and blueberries isn't enough you could drizzle on some agave nectar or honey. The variation possibilities are endless.

This will keep in the fridge for 48 hours, but I've left it 3 days and its tasted fine, although the texture does tend to thicken the longer you leave it, but this can be remedied by adding extra water.

P.S. If there's any kale water left over, drink it! it will taste like shit but it is so, so good for you. Think of it as the worst/best green tea you'll ever have. (I just down it in one, like medicine)

How not to be a dickhead

I'm been told I'm a nice person, quite a often, now that I think about it. I'm always surprised when people say it, not because I don't think I'm a nice person, but because I've always just assumed everyone is nice, this is stupid and naive of me but its just what I assume about people. This is obviously a lie, there are horrible people out there, doing and saying horrible things. As a designated nice person, I thought I'd give out some tips on how to be nice, or in other words, how not to be a dick-head.

1) Shut the hell up.

If you're one of those people that talk too much, even the most polite person will find it annoying. You're probably talking about yourself, sorry to say but no one is nearly as interesting as they think they are. This is a particularity dick-head thing to do when you've just met someone. I asked how your day was, not for your life story.

2) Noise pollution

You may be obsessed with that new techno/hip hop shit that your mate mixed in his home made garage studio, but I can tell you now, the rest of the bus are not. Use headphones, you are not cool, you are an inconsiderate dick-head.

3) Clean up after yourself

If you live with other people, they may not tell you that you're a slob to your face, but they'll be thinking it. Don't leave dishes towering in the sink, clothes all over the floor or spill things and not clean them up. They are your friends/flatmates/family - not your free, personal servants.

4) Show up on time

I have many friends that are never on time. It still boggles my mind that they can get to work with time to spare but will turn up to an event 2 hours late. This is most annoying if the waiting person is in cold weather/wearing heels/has other important things to get done that day. Plan your journeys properly, give yourself more than enough time to get ready, let people know that you'll be late at the very least.

5) Catcalling

Also known as giving unwanted sexual attention to random strangers on the street. We are just trying to get from A to B, don't rememeber asking for you to shout to the whole street about how hot I am. Its not flattering, its annoying and objectifying. Fuck. Off.

6) Not getting up for those in need

I've seen this too often, mostly on the bus. Its usually loud Secondary school kids sitting right at the front, ignoring the elderly or less able to walk fellow commuters who need those seats. Once, a bus driver refused to set off unless someone moved from the front so an old man with a cane could sit down. Fucking appalling, get up, if you can run for the bus you can stand in it too.

7) 'Slut-shaming'

If you've not heard this term, its pretty self-explanatory. Someone will have sex with multiple people, other people will talk badly about this person for having sex. Oh I'm sorry, I wasn't aware you had the right to tell me what to do with my body? If someone wants to have sex, with lots of people, and is doing it in a safe way for all involved then they are doing nothing wrong. Don't spew malicious bullshit about people because you're too afraid to be a confident, sexual being. Its not 'banter' is being a dick-head.

8)  Bitching

And I'm not talking about calling someone out for their negative/inappropriate behaviour, that's constructive, that's different. I'm talking about those people who bitch about others for small, trivial things to make themselves feel better. This is basically what bullies do to make themselves feel superior and important, its childish, unnecessary, and self-destructive.

These are just some of the tips, but I could carry on writing this all day! If you recognize any of these signs in your friends then exorcise them from your life, are you maybe in love with a dick-head? Ummm... show them this post and hope for the best, people can change, honest! ;)

Weekly Inspirations


Darkly Dreaming Dexter

This is the book that the series Dexter is based from, and its brilliant! the story line differs from the series so it was still a surprise in terms of plot. Its a first person narrative, written from the perspective of charming, self assured, socio-path Dexter Morgan. His character is ingenious, witty, terrifyingly observant and there's a great contrast between the cold, analytical way he see's the world and the more seductive, desire that makes him want to kill. I usually hate murder mystery/detective type stories but this original and compelling.

The Alchemist

This is a short read, but a powerful one. The plot is simple, but the themes this book covers are deep and ones everyone can relate to. A boy who has only ever known the life of a shephard, goes on a journey, what he discovers about the world, people, and himself are inspiring and spiritual. Although religion isn't really mentioned in this book, it still feels very spiritual. I think this should be required reading for all.

The Ocean at the end of the lane

This was a strange one, in a good way. Its written from an eleven year old boys perspective. It starts out normal enough, and then more and more outlandish/magical/unbelievable/scary things happen. Themes of memories, childhood, imagination and family run strong throughout. Next on my list is 'Coraline' which I only just found out was a book before it was a film, and written by Neil Gaiman too.


21 Pilots - Stressed Out.

I stumbled upon this when my YouTube was on 'autoplay', this song is so catchy, strange and real in lyrics and melody. The Lyrics in particular are so simple yet relatable, I have it on repeat.

Panic! at the disco - This is gospel (acoustic)

This is so soothing, I like to listen to it before bed. I've always loved Brendon Uries voice, but in this song, which I think is better than the original, it really makes you listen and appreciate the lyrics and how deep they are. Also, the video goes from whimsical to hilarious.

Selena Gomez ft ASAP Rocky - Good for you

I can't count how many times I've listened to this now. Its one of my favourites to put on when I'm getting ready for a night out. This is so different to anything I've heard from Selena Gomez before, she's, and ASAP Rocky is always amazing in anything.
