Weekly Inspirations.

My 'To-read' list is nearing 200 books, not even kidding. I wish I was one of those people who can race through a book but I just can't. I'm massively failing my 50 book challenge for this year but oh well. I've been writing a lot lately, my novel is around 50,000 words now that I've started the first round of editing. I've seen a few people on my Twitter timeline talking about how much they want to write but don't think they're good enough.

My advice is this, write. Don't think too much about it and don't waste a year just plotting, actually do the writing. Do it every day without fail because a page a day is a book in a year. Like everything the more you do it the better you will be and if you hate what you write that's because you know what good writing is. Don't let others put you off either, there will always be people who love what you do and people who hate it. As long as you love it, that's all that matters.

Here are a few things I'm loving right now.

Blue is the Warmest Color

A friend said this was good so I gave it a go, no offence to this friend but what the fuck...? its a french film - I watched with English sub - about a girl who falls in love and starts a relationship with another girl. There are many dragged out scenes, in fact the whole film is dragged out, the general story I thought was sweet and definitely emotive, but the way it is filmed isn't great. Also, there are several graphic sex scenes which last, and I'm not kidding, about 4 minutes each. That may not sound long but just think about it. This could have been good but it was poorly done, shame.

American Horror Story

I can't stop watching this series, I didn't think I would like it at first because I have a pretty weak tolerance for violence/gore/the horror genre in general. But, if its done in the right way, not too much, then I like it. The whole first series is about the past and present owners of a haunted house, and the secrets these characters reveal about their pasts.

I love it when producers/writers show characters who have major flaws and major virtues. All people have the capacity for good and evil and this series explores that aspect of human nature in a great way. Great plot, interesting characters, I like that each series only has a few episodes too so its not dragged out like a lot of other shows. If you like creepy and dark, watch it. Also I think it's available on Netflix.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

I didn't know this was a book! I saw the film with my little sisters and loved it, I usually like to read books before I watch their adaptations but I'm going to read it anyway because the reviews of this sound really good. For those that don't know, its a creepy story about a little girl who finds an alternate universe in her house. She likes this place better than reality, or she does until she realizes what she must do to stay a part of it.

I'm not listening to any artist or album in particular right now, but here are some of the songs that I have on repeat.

Sorry to the artist but I love this remix way better than the original song, both versions are good though.

I've only recently gotten into Ed Sheeran, I don't love all his songs but this one is super catchy, and it includes all my favorite things in one song - dance music, acoustic guitar and rapping!

I love Iggy, and this video is an amazing homage to the awesome 90's film Clueless - which I've seen, oh, 40 or 50 times.

Every time Lady Gaga comes out with a new single I hate it for about a week, and then it becomes the only thing I can listen to for ages. I don't know how she does it. Also loving the Donatella Versace look she has going at the moment.

Coffee Cake

I love Coffee, and I love cake, you see where this is going. The sponge is light, rich with the flavor of coffee and sweet with the butter icing on top. Great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, 3am snack and so on - just kidding, don't eat it at 3am, it will definitely keep you awake.

  • 150g caster sugar
  • 150g butter or margarine
  • 3 eggs
  • 150g self raising flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp hot water
  • 1 tbsp instant coffee (add more if you like it strong)
  • For The Icing
  • 225g icing sugar
  • 100g butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 tbsp instant coffee
  • 1 tbsp hot water

Pre-heat the oven to 160C/325F/Gas 3, and grease a cake tin with butter, line the bottom with a circle of baking paper - be smarter than me, I forgot to do this and lost half the cake to the bottom of the cake tin.

Measure out the sugar and butter, and cream together with a wooden spoon until pale and fluffy.

Whisk the eggs together in a seperate bowl and add slowly to the sugar/butter mixture. Every time you add a little egg, also add 1 tablespoon of flour. Don't use all the flour at this point. Once all the egg is incorporated add the rest of the flour and the baking powder.

Use any instant coffee you like, I'm using two different ones, the nicer one (on the left) for the icing, the less nice one for the cake batter.

Add 1 tablespoon of coffee granules (or more if you want it stronger) to 1 tablespoon of boiled water, add this to the cake batter. Pour cake into the cake tin and bake for around an hour, check on it at 45 minutes though.

While the cake is baking prepare the icing. Cream the butter and icing sugar together. Dissolve a tablespoon of coffee into a tablespoon of boiled water and add this to the butter icing, then add a teaspoon of vanilla essence. Put this in the fridge until the cake is baked, and fully cooled.

Again, if you're smarter than me you'll make sure there are no lumps in the icing sugar before you mix it with the butter. When the cake is cool, spread the icing all over the cake. It will look infinitely better if you use a cake spatula, instead of a fork like I did.

I'm not even going to lie, I eat at least half of this, no regrets.

Great for breakfast, not a healthy breakfast but... you can eat it with fruit and then boom, healthy. Goes well with coffee, obviously. If you don't love coffee cake then we can't be friends okay. Actually I'll forgive you if you like either coffee or cake, if you hate both then what are you, an alien?

Happy Baking!

Photo diary.

I had a peculiar dream the other night, I was swimming in the sea all happy, then suddenly this jelly fish walks - yes walks - over to me. I run through the sea and make it to the shore but the jelly fish just casually walks onto land and continues to chase me, in slow motion. I remember thinking 'that's weird, shouldn't jelly fish evaporate on land because they're mostly water?' haha, I seem to only ever get strange dreams when I nap during the day for some reason.

Massive digression over, here's what I've been up to. We went to this bar called 'House of Wolf' in Islington, but it wasn't as good as we expected, we tried to enjoy the 80's music (puke face) and took some selfies.

The smart way to split a bottle of wine.

Sunshine! its actually been hot and sunny in London, I'm going to try and savor this because who knows when it'll be like this again.

Me and my little sisters went to China Town to explore/soak in the sun/buy unnecessary amounts of food.

We went to Cafe Rouge for lunch, my friends said they do amazing food that is fairly priced, I'd agree with that. I was happy we got a window seat, I love people watching.

My sister got the Croque-Monsieur and I got the Croque-Madame. It was so. Good. Came with a lot of fries too. I wish I had tried the entire menu but I was stuffed after this meal. Great value for money. Also the waiting staff are really sweet.

I live for sunshine yellow yolks, my sister hates them, which is why she went for the non-egg version, but she's crazy okay.

My cat likes to sit anywhere and everywhere.

We've really let our garden go, it looks like a jungle out there, but the up side is seeing all the cool bugs that it attracts.

I drew this the other day, and got a lot of compliments on it, so thank you! it's Elsa from the Disney film 'Frozen' which I thought was funnier and more interesting than the average Disney princess film.

It's the hottest day of the year so far and I'm melting, but I'd rather it be blisteringly hot that cold like it is the majority of the time here. Looking forward to the picnic we've planned for Saturday, I haven't had one in years, I've also thought about going to the zoo and the beach lately, when did I become a ten year old again?

Happy Thursday! xoxo
