Weekly Inspirations

The list of films and books I want to watch/read has reached an all time high, I need to stop adding to it. Also I've spent an obscene amount of time online looking at food porn and pretty hair. Side note: what the hell is up with the weather lately? Summer in London sucks. Anyway, here are the things I'm into at the moment.

Books to read: Forbidden edition

I love to read anything that was once banned, I guess its just the rebel in me.

This was banned for "language and sexual references"
I download this a long time ago but because of uni work I never really got around to reading it. I enjoyed the film (watch it) so I hope this will be as good, if not better. It's also considered a literary classic.

Banned for sexual portrayal of older man with a child.
This is one of my friends favorite books, and although quite unsettling and dark subject matter, it does sound interesting. It's about a 38 year old Literature professor who becomes obsessed, and sexually involved with, a 12 year old girl - who is his step-daughter. I'm not a big fan of erotic novels but I'll give it a go.

Banned for obscenity
The author was friends with Allen Ginsberg, who I love, so I thought I'd read some of his work. He was seriously addicted to drugs and
I'm trying to find unusual books, this one is structured into several short scenes that are loosely connected. They stories are intended to be read in any order, which I think is cool.

I'm a big Lana Del Rey fan, but I was disappointed by her latest album 'Ultraviolence', that's not to say that I hated it. There are some great songs but for me only a few of them. My favorite songs on the album are 'Old Money', 'Flipside' (which I think is only on the Japanese edition, but you can find it on youtube), 'Pretty when you cry', and of course, her latest single West Coast, which is the one I have on repeat as I write this blog.

Weekly inspirations.

Everyone has a morning routine, mine is to get up, have a cup of coffee, listen to new music and scroll down Tumblr for inspiration. Little tip, whilst scrolling, instead of using the mouse and side bar, you can press 'J' and 'K' keys to go up and down the page. Here are some random pictures from my Tumblr than are inspiring me at the moment.

The books I plan on reading next are:

Daughter Of Smoke And Bone

Days Of Blood And Starlight

Dreams Of Gods And Monsters – all by Laini Taylor

This trilogy I saw reviewed on GoodReads and it sounds awesome, its about a 17 year old art student living in Prague who becomes involved in an otherworldly war, drama and fantasy, just my kind of book! The series is also currently being made into a film.

The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
I read '1000 Splendid Suns' by him and loved it, hope this one is good too.

The Book Thief – Marckus Zusak
Heard it was good, recently been made into a film.

Sia Furler  -  I am obsessed with some of her songs! some of them I'm not that into but the ones I am into are super catchy and have interesting lyrics. If you like emotive singing with dance-y beats, check out 'Big Girl Little Girl', 'Elastic Heart', 'Eye of the Needle', and the slower, more thematic sounding 'I'm in here'.

Also, her music video for 'Chandelier' has been in circulation recently and I've probably seen it 10 times now, the little girl who dances in the video is only 11! what the hell am I doing with my life? I wish I were that talented that young.

I watched this yesterday and my god, what a film. Its stylish, interesting, intellectual, funny, and based on a true story which is always cool. I studied the poet Allen Ginsberg in uni and I really wish I had seen this before writing my essay! Watch it, you won't regret it.

Hope you feel a little more inspired, if you have any book/film/music recommendations let me know in the comments and I'll check them out.

Lemon Drizzle Cake

After making this my older sister said to me "Screw Publishing, you should just open your own bakery" high praise indeed. One of my favorite kinds of cake is lemon drizzle, its sweet, spongy, with a lemony sugar crust, there's nothing not to love about that combination. It's pretty easy to make too, and you know how I love easy.

225g Butter
225g Caster Sugar
4 eggs
Finely Grated Zest of 1 Lemon
225g Self-Raising Flour

For the Drizzle:

Juice of 1 and a half Lemons
85g Sugar

Firstly we need to preheat the oven to 180, then beat the sugar and butter together until light and creamy.

Then we add the eggs, one at a time, beating it into the mixture with a wooden spoon.

Sift the flour into the mix and stir until the flour is fully incorporated.

You want the zest as fine as possible, I used a grater with four different sizes and picked the smallest one. You can use a fork for this if you prefer.

Then we pour the mixture into a cake tin / loaf tin. If your don't have grease proof paper (I didn't) then butter the tin lightly and sift a little bit of flour over the top, dust the excess off.

Use some form of utensil, like a skewer, to pierce the cake all the way to the bottom of the tin. If it comes out clean, its done. If there is cake mix on it, put it back in the oven. You can cover it with foil while it bakes if you feel its getting a little too brown on top.

Mix the sugar and lemon juice together to make the glaze, pierce the cake several times and pour the glaze on top.

Lemony, sugary goodness, that's what that is.

I like mine with custard, but it tastes just as good without it. Fair warning, the surface of lemons can be a little slippery so don't grate off your thumb like I did! I can't tell you how many times I've done that to myself, I never learn.

This cake disappeared pretty quickly, which means it must have been pretty good. The left over lemons can be cut and put into a glass of water for drinking, or left in the fridge for a few days to make it smell nice. I'm going to try and include some healthier recipes, having been inspired by some recipes my sisters showed me, probably not for a while though, until then I'll be living up to my blogs name!
